GameLark has teamed up with Materia Collective, to create VERSUS, an album celebrating decades of fighting music.
VERSUS is a two-part album that brings together these two communities in creating 47 tracks of fighting game covers, just in time for the 2016 Evolution Champion Series. The album brings in music from world-renowned games including Street Fighter, Marvel vs. Capcom, Pokken Tournament, Mortal Kombat, Tekken, among many others. “VERSUS was a perfect opportunity to show the collaborative nature of the VGM community,” says Allen Brasch, founder and head of GameLark. “We see countless collaborations between individual artists so I thought, why not collaborate between labels?”
Brasch and Sebastian Wolff, the founder of Materia Collective, set up the album to be a friendly competition between the two groups, in the spirit of collaboration and of the fighting game genre. “I think that both GameLark and Materia Collective artists felt compelled to do their best work on this album,” says Brasch. “There was a friendly competition between the labels, but it happened in the best way possible. Everyone was trying to top themselves, to make the best track they could, and I think the end result shows that.”
